DRAGON PUMPKINS

Dragon pumpkin carving ideas and free stencils

A dragon works best on a pumpkin as one strong profile: a horned head, a curled tail, or a winged body against a moon. Cut the fire or the background so it glows, and let the dragon itself stay dark, or cut the whole dragon so it glows on its own. Most of the difficulty is in the spikes, horns and wing tips, so draw them thick.

Ideas

Dragon head in profile

Draw a side view of a dragon's head with a long snout, two swept-back horns, and an open jaw. Cut the head out so it glows, leaving an eye as a small round of pumpkin joined by a bridge. A big pumpkin gives the horns enough room.

Fire-breathing dragon

Leave the dragon uncut as a dark shape and cut the flames coming from its mouth. Lit, the fire is the brightest thing on the pumpkin, which is exactly where you want people to look.

Dragon against the moon

Cut a large moon and leave a flying dragon uncut inside it, joined to the rim at a wing tip, the tail, and the head. The dragon reads as a dark silhouette in front of a bright circle.

Dragon wrapped around the pumpkin

Draw a long body that curls around the pumpkin from the front to the back, ending in a tail tip near the bottom. Cut a line of spikes along the back so they glow and leave the body solid. It looks good from several angles on a table.

Dragon eye close-up

Fill one side with a single giant eye: a narrow vertical slit pupil, an almond-shaped eye, and scales etched around it. Cut the eye so it glows and leave the slit pupil as a strip of pumpkin joined at the top and bottom.

Baby dragon hatching

Draw a round, cracked egg with a small dragon head poking out of the top. Cut the crack lines and the eyes, and etch the egg shell. It suits kids who want a dragon that isn't scary.

Wings on the side

Carve a face on the front of the pumpkin and a bat-like dragon wing on each side. Cut the spaces between the wing bones so they glow and keep the bones as wide strips of pumpkin.

Etched scales

Scrape overlapping half-circle scales across the body instead of cutting them. The etched scales glow softly, and the body keeps its strength.
