SCARY PUMPKINS
Scary pumpkin carving ideas and stencils
A scary pumpkin comes down to the eyes and the mouth. Angle the inner corners of the eyes down toward the nose, cut a wide mouth full of uneven, pointed teeth, and leave plenty of dark pumpkin between them so the glowing shapes look sharp. The ideas below start with faces and move to skulls and creatures.

Ideas
Angry slanted eyes
Cut two triangles or wedge shapes with the inner corners pointing down toward the nose. That single change turns a friendly face into a glaring one, and it reads clearly even from the sidewalk.
Jagged tooth grin
Draw a wide crescent mouth and fill it with pointed teeth hanging down from the top lip and up from the bottom. Cut the gaps between the teeth so the gaps glow and the teeth stay as dark pumpkin. Keep each tooth at least a thumb wide at its base.
Fanged vampire mouth
A closed, flat mouth with two long fangs dropping from the top lip looks colder than a big grin. Cut the mouth as a thin glowing slit and leave the fangs attached to the upper lip as pumpkin wall.
Stitched mouth
Cut a long, narrow mouth, then leave short vertical bars of pumpkin across it as stitches. Lit, it looks like a sewn-shut grin. Make each stitch about a finger wide so it does not crack.
Skull face
Cut two large round or heart-shaped eye sockets, an upside-down heart for the nose, and a row of square teeth. Because the sockets glow, the skull reads as bright holes in a dark face, which is how people expect a lit skull to look.
Glowing slit pupils
For a creature or cat-like stare, cut each eye as a narrow vertical slit instead of a whole eye shape. A thin bright line in a dark face is more unsettling than a big hole.
Pumpkin eating a pumpkin
Carve a large pumpkin with a huge open mouth, then set a small carved pumpkin partly inside it. Both glow, and the scene works from any distance. Cut the big mouth wide enough before you try to fit the small one.
Etched veins and scars
Scrape the skin in thin branching lines around the eyes without cutting through. The etched lines glow a dull yellow next to the bright eyes, which adds a sickly, cracked look.
Eyes peering out
Skip the mouth entirely. Cut only two small, close-set eyes high on the pumpkin. In the dark it looks like something watching from inside.
Carving tips
- Leave more dark wall than you think. Scary designs depend on contrast, and big glowing areas wash out the expression.
- Point teeth toward each other but stop them short of touching, so each tooth stays attached to its own lip.
- Cut the small details, like nostrils and teeth gaps, first while the wall is still strong, then cut the big eye and mouth openings.
- A dim, warm light looks spookier than a bright white one. Try a flickering battery LED low in the pumpkin so light hits the face from below.
- Tall, narrow pumpkins make long, gaunt faces. Short, wide pumpkins suit monster grins.
