OWL PUMPKINS
Owl pumpkin carving ideas and stencils
An owl reads from two features: big round eyes and pointed ear tufts. Cut the eyes so they glow, add a small beak, and use the pumpkin's round shape as the owl's body. Feathers can be cut as scallops or etched for a softer look.

Each one prints at actual size on Letter or A4 and passed our carving checks, so every piece stays attached. Black areas are cut away and glow.
Ideas
Big-eyed owl face
Cut two large round eyes close together, leave a pupil of pumpkin in each joined to the eye's edge by a bridge, and cut a small downward triangle beak between them. Notch two pointed ear tufts at the top of the pumpkin.
Ring eyes
Instead of whole circles, cut each eye as a thick glowing ring around a solid pumpkin center. Leave one or two bridges across the ring so the center stays in place. It gives the owl a wide-awake stare.
Scalloped feather chest
Below the face, cut rows of small U shapes for chest feathers. Stagger each row like roof shingles and leave a finger's width of pumpkin between them.
Etched feathers
Scrape the feather pattern into the skin instead of cutting it. The chest glows softly while the cut eyes stay bright, which keeps the eyes the focus.
Owl on a branch
Leave the owl as a dark silhouette sitting on a branch, with a big glowing moon cut behind it. Cut only the eyes through the owl so they shine.
Sleepy owl
Cut each eye as a thin downward curve, like closed lids, with a small beak. It reads as a calm, cute owl and needs very little cutting.
Stacked owl family
Carve a big owl on a large pumpkin and a small owl on a pie pumpkin set beside it. Use the same eye shapes on both so they read as a pair.
Drilled owl
Drill the eye outlines and feather rows as dots, then cut only the beak. A good choice if you want an owl without delicate saw work.
Carving tips
- Make the eyes larger than feels right. Owls are recognized by their eyes, and small eyes make the pumpkin look like a plain face.
- Pupils are the tricky part. Any pumpkin pupil inside a cut eye needs a bridge to the rim, or it falls out.
- Use the stem as the top of the head, and cut the ear tufts on either side so they point up.
- A wide, round pumpkin makes a better owl body than a tall one.
- Trace the eyes around a cup or jar lid so they match.
