WOLF PUMPKINS
Wolf pumpkin carving ideas and free stencils
The best-known wolf pumpkin is a wolf howling at a full moon: cut the moon so it glows and leave the wolf as a dark silhouette in front of it. A wolf head facing forward also works, with glowing eyes and a mouth full of teeth. The pointed ears, raised muzzle and tufted chest are what make the shape read as a wolf and not a dog.

Ideas
Howling at the moon
Cut a big full moon and leave the wolf uncut inside it, sitting with its head tipped back. The wolf's nose and ears touching the moon's rim act as bridges, and the wolf reads as black against a bright circle.
Glowing wolf silhouette
Cut the same howling wolf out instead, so the wolf glows and the pumpkin around it stays dark. This is easier on a smaller pumpkin, because there is less to cut away.
Wolf on a ridge
Cut a large moon set low enough that a jagged ridge crosses its bottom edge. Leave the ridge and a wolf standing on it uncut, so both show dark against the moon. Add a pine tree shape at one side for a full scene.
Snarling werewolf face
Draw a front-facing face with slanted eyes, a wrinkled snout, and an open mouth with long fangs. Cut the eyes and the mouth around the fangs, and etch the fur along the cheeks.
Wolf eyes in the dark
Cut only two narrow, slanted eyes high on the pumpkin and nothing else. In a dark yard, it looks like something watching from the bushes.
Wolf head profile
Draw a side view of a wolf head with its ears up and a ruff of fur at the neck. Cut the head out so it glows, and leave a small eye of pumpkin joined by a bridge.
Wolf and pine trees
Etch a row of pine trees around the pumpkin and cut a running wolf between them. The trees glow faintly behind the brighter wolf.
Carving tips
- Draw the ears tall, pointed and close together. That detail is what separates a wolf from a dog or fox.
- For the howling wolf, tip the muzzle up steeply and keep a clear gap between the chin and the chest, so the pose reads at a distance.
- Fur tufts along the neck and chest should be a few large zigzags, not many small ones. Each point you keep needs a wide base.
- When the wolf is the uncut shape inside a moon, it must touch the rim in at least two places, or the whole wolf falls out.
- Fangs left as pumpkin are fragile. Cut the mouth slowly, toward the tip of each fang, and pin a broken one back with part of a toothpick.
