CUTE PUMPKINS
Cute pumpkin carving ideas and faces
Cute pumpkins use round shapes, eyes set wide apart and low, and a small mouth. Upturned smiles, rosy etched cheeks, and simple animals like cats, owls and friendly ghosts all work. Most cute designs are also easy, so they suit a first pumpkin or carving with kids.

Ideas
Big round eyes
Cut two large circles set wide apart and a little below the middle of the pumpkin, then add a tiny smile underneath. Low, wide eyes make any face look younger and sweeter.
Eyes with sparkle highlights
Cut each round eye as a glowing hole but leave a small circle of pumpkin near the top as a highlight. Join the highlight to the edge of the eye with a short bridge, or it will fall out.
Happy closed eyes
Cut each eye as a thin, upside-down U, like a smiling squint. Paired with a small open smile, it reads as a laughing face and has very little cutting.
Etched rosy cheeks
Scrape two round patches of skin under the eyes without cutting through. They glow softer than the eyes and mouth, like blushing cheeks.
Kitty face
Two round eyes, a small triangle nose, and a mouth shaped like a wide letter W. Cut short whisker slits on each side, kept thick enough to survive. The stem can stand in for a bow or tuft on top.
Friendly ghost
Cut a ghost body with a wavy bottom so it glows, and leave two oval eyes and a small round mouth as pumpkin inside it. Each kept feature needs a bridge to the edge of the body.
Little bat
One small bat with wide, rounded wings cut out near the middle of the pumpkin. Rounded wing tips look cuter than sharp ones and are easier to cut.
Polka dot pumpkin
Drill dots of two or three sizes all over the pumpkin. With a light inside, it looks like a lantern full of small stars.
Heart face
Cut heart-shaped eyes and a small heart nose with a gentle smile. Hearts are easy to trace from a paper template.
Carving tips
- Place the features low on the pumpkin with a big forehead above them. That proportion is what makes a face look cute.
- Keep mouths small. A wide grin with teeth quickly turns goofy or spooky.
- Round shapes cut more cleanly if you work in short strokes and turn the pumpkin, not the saw.
- Small, short pumpkins look cuter than tall ones. Pie pumpkins work well for kid-sized faces.
- If kids are helping, let them draw the face with a washable marker and an adult do the cutting.
